Sports training plays a pivotal role in shaping the journey of high school athletes, offering them the tools to excel on the field, prevent injuries, and develop invaluable personal and leadership skills. Let’s delve into why sports training is not just an option, but a necessity for high school athletes aiming for greatness.
When it comes to achieving peak performance, strength and conditioning training is the cornerstone. It allows us to indentify opportunities to improve athleticism, and choose safe, controlled situations to push an athletes capacity forward…
Strength training routines tailored to specifically to the athlete enhance sport specific muscle power and endurance, giving athletes the edge they need to outperform their opponents. Strength, according to much of the research available, is perhaps the singular greatest attribute for projecting an athletes future success on the field. You can read this published article from the Journal of Exercise Science for more insight …. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8758156/
Ullman ZJ, Fernandez MB, Klein M. Effects of Isometric Exercises versus Static Stretching in Warm-up Regimens for Running Sport Athletes: A Systematic Review. Int J Exerc Sci. 2021 Oct 1;14(6):1204-1218. PMID: 35096248; PMCID: PMC8758156.
Agility drills refine coordination and quickness in response to visual or auditory stimuli, crucial for maneuvering through intense game situations. Through targeted training programs, high school athletes can maximize their athletic potential and dominate on the field. However, perhaps the more important benefit is the proactive ability to stave off injuries…
Strength training is perhaps the most insulative quality in the injury prevention game. I’m often asked which “stretches” athletes should perform to prevent injuries, and they are often shocked at my response when I say stretching is maybe the worst injury prevention tactic you could employ. “ Of all the potential ways to use an athletes time, stretching often offers very little return on time investment.” says Mike Stella, Athletic Trainer to many professional athletes and owner of The Movement Underground in Seaford, NY.
Injuries can sideline even the most promising athletes, derailing their aspirations and compromising their long-term prospects.
”This is literally my story as a Long Island Athlete in the early 2000s… I was a promising lacrosse standout, when a full knee blow out cost me multiple college opportunities….it did however, lead me to my passion, which is to help prevent, rehabilitate, and train athletes to never slip through the cracks in healthcare…I built The Movement Underground from the deep frustration of never achieving my pre injury level of performance. Many people tried to help me, but basic rehab left me immobile, in pain, and struggling with my identity as an athlete.”
“That’s where sports training steps in as a proactive measure against injuries, and is the very purpose of designing our brand new facility on Merrick Rd in Seaford…” states Mike Stella. Warm-up exercises, including dynamic movement and mobility drills, prepare the body for rigorous physical activity, reducing the risk of strains and sprains. Cool-down routines aid in muscle recovery, mitigating post-exercise soreness and stiffness. Incorporating injury prevention exercises, such as balance and stability drills, fortifies vulnerable areas, safeguarding athletes from common sports-related injuries. By integrating these techniques into their training regimen, high school athletes can stay healthy and maintain their competitive edge throughout the season.
Beyond the physical realm, sports training cultivates essential life skills that extend far beyond the playing field. In the modern world, instant gratification is the norm… Many youth athletes develop an ego that matches their early sport success, and curtails them from achieving greatness beyond the field. While Team sports instill the value of teamwork, teaching athletes to collaborate effectively with peers towards a common goal, the problem with over emphasis on winning and personal accolades early in an athletes development, often become the killer of talent… Discipline and dedication are instilled through rigorous training schedules, fostering a strong work ethic and resilience in the face of adversity. Mr Stella goes on to say…”No matter who you are, where you come from, or what advantages or disadvantages faces…the bar still weighs 45 lbs… and it can teach you the value of delayed gratification and sacrifice, building the leadership qualities most college coaches drool over…”
Leadership opportunities arise as athletes take on roles of captaincy or mentorship, honing their ability to inspire and motivate their teammates. The lessons learned through sports training – perseverance, sportsmanship, and accountability – shape not only athletic success but also character development, preparing high school athletes for the challenges of life beyond graduation.
Sports training isn’t just about building muscles or mastering plays – it’s about nurturing the holistic development of high school athletes. By prioritizing sports training, athletes can unlock their full potential, elevate their performance, and forge lifelong skills that extend far beyond the confines of the field. As high school athletes embark on their athletic journey, let us remember that sports training isn’t just a means to an end – it’s a transformative experience that shapes champions, both on and off the field.
It has always been my goal to put our high school athletes around growth minded people. All of our coaches are former HS/Collegiate Athletes…and it isn’t uncommon for our high schoolers to train along side pro athletes from MLB, UFC, NBA and more… Sports are a privilege…not a right…Make sure you are doing the things necessary to EARN the jersey and represent yourself, your family, and community with pride.
